Controversial fashion trends have existed in a
variety of ways throughout the past few decades. Some clothing items that
caused a stir in society at the time by defying fashion rules have since become
essential pieces of our look. Others were troublesome and still are. In both
instances, we discover how closely tied fashion is to the larger cultural and
political environment because it both reflects and frequently rejects current
attitudes. Designers may interact with a history of cultural appropriation and
prejudice that, regrettably, still exists both inside and outside the fashion
industry, just as they can capture and drastically alter a cultural moment.
Here are two designers that we talk about in this
blog which turned heads in shock and sparked outrage and debate.

Lotta
Volkova
Lotta Volkova, a Russian
stylist and consultant who currently resides in Paris and works abroad, was
born in Vladivostok and has constantly captured the spirit of the future. At
London's Central Saint Martins College, where she spent her formative years
studying photography and fine art, she later focused her diverse range of
creative interests on styling. Volkova views style as the excitement of the
meeting and a never-ending investigation into the ways in which fashion can
investigate various cultures, subcultures, and dress codes throughout eras and present
them in fresh ways.
Volkova was asked to create an
exclusive capsule collection for Adidas because of her passion for conveying
stories across media and landing styling and consulting positions with Miu Miu
and Blumarine. Volkova, who thrives on creative collaboration, played a crucial
part in creating the identity of Demna Gvasalia's Vetements and, later, her
Balenciaga line. Until her departure in 2018, she participated in casting,
styling, and collection consultation to help establish the companies'
aesthetics.
Volkova is a senior fashion
editor at large for i-D, and her editorial work has featured in the pages of
publications like Vogue Italia, Double, Self Service, Re-Edition, System,
DAZED, AnOther, and i-D. Photographers Steven Meisel, Harley Weir, Juergen
Teller, Mert and Marcus, Julie Greve, Collier Schorr, and Johnny Dufort are
some of her collaborations.
Recently in November 2022, there
was a claim that a photo showed Lotta Volkova, the top designer for luxury fashion brand
Balenciaga, dressed in a devil-like outfit while holding two red dolls.
but we assess that as false as
Volkova, the Russian stylist, is not Balenciaga’s top designer, nor is she the
woman in the photo, her agent confirmed to The Associated Press. The image
actually shows a model in a 2016 China Fashion Week show for Sheguang Hu, a
Chinese fashion designer and performance artist.
Amidst this Balenciaga’s
campaign controversy, stylist’s private Instagram page had also been
receiving immense traction. Similar to the fashion house, the latter
uploaded several disturbing images featuring children on her social media account.
Since viewing the same, netizens have been appalled.
Trigger warning: This article contains some images that might be uncomfortable. Viewer's discretion is advised.
Many images featured children. Some included a blonde girl dressed in a seemingly pink swimsuit lying sideways and waving to the camera, a bedroom that appears to be covered in bloodstains, and another teddy bear wrapped in what seems to be a red ribbon, and etc.
- Kanye West
" I love nazis... I see good things about Hitler also... I like Hitler" he said in an interview several times.
Kanye West is a well-known rapper and fashion designer, but he is also well-known for stirring up controversy outside of his professional endeavours.
Fans of Ye have watched everything throughout the years, from his conflict with Taylor Swift to some of his jarring comments about his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian.
Although Ye's propensity for airing personal thoughts has long been evident, the artist's actions have not only damaged the way the public perceives him but have also caused West to get into major legal issues.
Recently Ye, triggered a series of controversies in October 2022, including making anti-Semitic remarks on social media and wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt during the Paris Fashion Week.Over the next few days, several top brands and athletes associated with the American rapper ended their relationship with him. As a result, Ye, who owns some of the most expensive things such as ranches and a Boeing 747, is no longer a billionaire on Forbes’ list — a status he enjoyed since 2020.
So basically, Ye held a private show for 100 guests at the Paris Fashion Week on 3 October. Where he was photographed wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt. The slogan was criticised by many as a fascist call in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. According to hate group tracker Southern Poverty Law Centre, White Lives Matter is a neo-Nazi group. He later went on to post various anti jewish tweets like “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE.” and “You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda,” As a result, Ye was locked out of Twitter while Meta restricted his Instagram account.
The furore over Ye’s posts also led his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, who is one of the most followed celebrities on Instagram, to issue a statement condemning his remarks.
“Hate speech is never OK or excusable. I stand together with the Jewish community and call on the terrible violence and hateful rhetoric towards them to come to an immediate end,” Kardashian posted on both Twitter and Instagram without naming Ye.
Days later, Ye appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show and made conspiratorial comments which were not aired by the channel.
In the same interview, Ye defended his decision to wear the “White Lives Matter” T-shirt.
“I said, ‘I thought the shirt was a funny shirt; I thought the idea of me wearing it was funny,’” he told Carlson. “And I said, ‘Dad, why did you think it was funny?’ He said, ‘Just a Black man stating the obvious.’”
He also claimed that former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is Jewish, negotiated Middle-East peace deals “to make money.”
As things got heated further around Ye’s remarks, several top names from the world of business that were associated with the rapper terminated their relationship with him.
